Is this really adoption?

Based on current law, adoption only refers to the placement of a child after birth. Therefore, instead of using adoption laws, legal agreements are used to govern the process of embryo donation. The recipient parents' relationship with the child is just as binding as a legal adoption.

The term "embryo adoption" is preferred by some parents to illustrate that they have adopted a life that has already been created. In addition, children of embryo adoption will face some of the same issues as children already adopted -- that is, having a genetic heritage different from their parents. Further research is underway on this issue.
