CBS Accused of Giving Embryo Adoption Short Shrift
Knoxville, TN-February 22, 2006
- The National Embryo
Donation Center (NEDC) stresses the call for education
in regards to embryo donation and adoption. Unfortunately,
the CBS News program, "60 Minutes" did a grave injustice
to embryo donation/adoption when they recently aired the segment
"A Surplus of Embryos."
This segment was very disappointing to the
couple Christy and Shannon Bomar, who were interviewed and
videotaped by "60 Minutes," during the transfer
of their adopted embryos into Christy's womb. The segment
failed to air not only the procedure and interviews that led
up to it, but most importantly the result of the transfer-
the pregnancy!
The Bomar's feel that "60 Minutes"
only explained one side of the story and that the segment
was skewed to further their political views about embryonic
stem cell research. For this couple, embryo donation and adoption
is not a political issue, but the reality of a new life for
their family.
"Embryo adoption was not shown as a good
option for couples who wanted to grow a family," explained
Christy. She went on to say "If people knew about the
procedure and the option to adopt embryos, there would be
more children born from embryo adoption."
Another couple who are donating their embryos
to the NEDC found the coverage to be very biased as well.
They feel "60 Minutes" could have done an important
social service; instead they were more interested in their
political agenda. This couple went on to state, "You
know, it's sad that they can't just do a story on embryo adoptions
now,
that's a great story to be told!"
